Self-custodial Bitcoin staking protocol Babylon announces mainnet

    • Babylon, the self-custodial Bitcoin staking protocol, will launch its mainnet on August 22, 2024.
    • The launch brings a “third native use-case of Bitcoin” to users, adding staking to its store of value and payment, Fisher Yu, co-founder of Babylon, said.

Babylon, a self-custodial Bitcoin staking protocol, has announced the launch of its phase-1 mainnet as it eyes the growing decentralised finance market on the leading blockchain network.

    Babylon announces Bitcoin staking mainnet

In an announcement on Monday, the protocol revealed its mainnet launch will go live on August 22, 2024. The first phase of the mainnet will allow BTC holders to stake their coins with the self-custodial protocol.

Meanwhile, upcoming phases will see the Bitcoin protocol allow proof-of-stake networks to tap into the $1 trillion bitcoin network security. Projects that can gain access to and utilise this ecosystem include layer-2 chains, data availability layers and oracles.

“This launch leads to the third native use-case of Bitcoin, the asset beside value storage and simple payment: stake to secure networks and earn,” Fisher Yu, co-founder of the Babylon project, said. “We expect this to enhance the crypto-economic security of PoS chains and other decentralised applications, offering them a more secure and reliable infrastructure, while at the same time unlocking the value from the idle, unencumbered $1 trillion Bitcoin ecosystem.”

Babylon’s announcement comes after the platform raised $70 million in a funding round led by crypto venture capital firm Paradigm. Mainnet is supported by more than 200 finality providers, including Allnodes, Galaxy Digital, P2P, Figment, Luganodes, and Stakefish.

The project has also received support from top wallets such as Binance Web3 Wallet, OKX Web3 Wallet, Bitget Wallet, Keystone and TomoWallet.

Adding to the fervour, Pullix’s PLX token enters its penultimate presale stage, promising unique features and a lucrative investment opportunity.

Let’s delve into the details of these groundbreaking developments.

    Starknet’s STRK airdrop makes waves

Starknet, the Ethereum-based ZK-Rollup Layer 2 network, has unveiled its highly anticipated STRK token through an extensive Airdrop campaign. The Starknet Foundation, responsible for the token launch, is distributing STRK to approximately 1.3 million wallet addresses.

The STRK token is the native token of Starknet network and it plays a pivotal role in decentralization and governance within the network. Starknet enhances scalability for decentralized applications (dApps) using an Ethereum-based ZK-Rollup Layer 2 while ensuring the robust security of the Ethereum settlement layer.

    OKX listing the STRK token

OKX Exchange, a major player in the cryptocurrency market, is set to provide its users with access to Starknet’s STRK token. The exchange’s decision to list STRK follows the highly anticipated Airdrop announcement, further fueling expectations for increased liquidity and trading opportunities.

The STRK token will be tradable on the OKX exchange from February 19th at 09:00 AM local time. Users can also withdraw their STRK tokens starting February 21st at 04:00 AM local time. The initial trading pair offered is STRK/USDT, with additional pairs possibly emerging based on user demand and market conditions.

The move by OKX to list STRK suggests that other prominent exchanges, including Binance, may soon follow suit. This potential expansion to other major exchanges could contribute to the broader adoption and recognition of Starknet’s innovative Layer 2 solution.

Pullix: seizing the future of DeFi

In the realm of decentralized finance (DeFi), Pullix is carving its niche with the PLX token, currently in its second-last presale stage. • Binance announces Serum, Sonm and DFI.money delisting

Binance announces Serum, Sonm and DFI.money delisting

    • The Binance news saw all three altcoins nosedive double-digits.
    • Serum (SRM) was down 29%, Sonm (SNM) shed 58% and DFI.money (YFII) declined by 16% in 24 hours.
    • Trading on all pairs for the tokens will end on August 22, 2023.

Serum (SRM), Sonm (SNM) and DFI.money (YFII) are among the biggest losers in the crypto market today. As of writing, SRM, SNM and YFII have all plummeted double-digits.

Binance to delist SRM, SNM and YFII

Binance announced on Tuesday that it will “delist and cease trading on all trading pairs” for Serum, DFI.Money and Sonm from its platform on August 22. The exchange noted in a notice to customers that the delisting is part of its period review of every listed digital asset.

When a coin or token no longer meets this standard, or the industry changes, we conduct a more in-depth review and potentially delist it. We believe this best protects all our users,” the exchange said in a general announcement.

Although Binance did not specify the reasons for removing support for each of the altcoin, it did cite certain metrics considered during the periodic reviews. These include team commitment, development activity, trading volume and liquidity and network safety with regard to attacks.

    Market reaction plunges affected altcoins

According to data from CoinGecko, Sonm has seen the most declines in its 24-hour performance as it traded 58% down around 9.45 am ET. The token was changing hands for around $0.105392.

Serum has nosedived 29% in the same period to just above $0.05 to see its 7-day returns reach -35% and over 50% in the past 30 days. Serum, a project linked to FTX and Alameda Research, is down 99.6% from its all-time high above $13 hit in September 2021.

Elsewhere, DFI.money, which is a yield farming aggregator forked from yearn.finance, was down 16% in the past 24 hours to trade around $605. YFII has declined by more than 24% in the past month and traded at a level that’s more than 93% down from its ATH of $9,251 reached in September 2020.

Declines for the three altcoins come as most of the top 20 assets by market cap continued to trade flat, with Bitcoin constrained below $30k and Ethereum unable to breach $1,900.
