Neptune adds 20 BTC to Bitcoin strategy, also buys 1m DOGE

    • Canadian blockchain firm Neptune Digital Assets announced it purchased 20 BTC worth almost $2 million.
    • The company also bought Dogecoin, scooping the meme coin on December 27, 2024 at the average price of $0.37 per DOGE.

Neptune Digital Assets, a Canada-based blockchain firm, has announced it added 20 Bitcoin (BTC) to its holdings.

The publicly-traded company, whose operations include Bitcoin mining, staking and blockchain nodes, revealed it acquired the 20 BTC as it expanded its Bitcoin strategy between January 26 and Feb. 3, 2025.

    Neptune also buys Dogecoin

According to a press release, Neptune scooped the BTC at the average price of $99,833 per coin. This means the company spent nearly $2 million to buy more of the flagship digital asset. Neptune’s total BTC holdings rose to 376 BTC with this purchase.

Neptune is one of over 60 public companies that can issue debt and use the proceeds to buy BTC. The biggest hodler among these is US-listed MicroStrategy.

Dogecoin is the other cryptocurrency to attract the blockchain firm. Per the announcement on Feb 4, the company acquired 1 million DOGE on December 27, 2024 at the average price of $0.37 per token. Neptune said it bought the meme coin via a “strategic derivative purchase.”

“As stated in previous news releases, Neptune will be acquiring additional assets, leveraging our enhanced purchasing power through the Sygnum credit line. With a strong focus on BTC, these initial acquisitions show Neptune’s commitment to its growth strategy while meticulously managing leverage risk and debt levels,” Cale Moodie, Neptune’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Both Bitcoin and Dogecoin have experienced sharp volatility in the past few days, with BTC and DOGE plummeting on Monday amid tariffs-driven sell-off across risk assets.

BTC fell to lows of $92k before bouncing to retest resistance above the psychological $100k level. Currently, the benchmark asset trades just above $99,400.

Meanwhile, DOGE slumped to below $0.22 and currently hovers near $0.27.

  • Italy’s largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, buys $1M Bitcoin

Italy’s largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, buys $1M Bitcoin

Italy's largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, buys $1M Bitcoin
    • Intesa Sanpaolo Bank buys $1 million in Bitcoin
    • The bank is the first Italian bank to invest in crypto
    • The move is a low-risk experiment with digital assets in preparation for potential client demand

In a pioneering move for Italy’s financial sector, Intesa Sanpaolo, the country’s largest bank, has ventured into the cryptocurrency market by purchasing $1 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC).

This acquisition marks a significant milestone as the first direct cryptocurrency purchase by a major Italian bank, reflecting the growing acceptance of digital assets in traditional finance.

A test in preparation for potential client demands

The transaction, which netted Intesa Sanpaolo 11 Bitcoin, underscores a cautious yet optimistic approach towards cryptocurrencies.

According to an internal memo and subsequent reports by Reuters, this investment is seen as an experiment within the bank’s vast portfolio, which includes over $100 billion in securities.

The bank’s CEO Carlo Messina described the purchase as a test, emphasizing the minimal risk involved due to the relatively small amount compared to the bank’s total assets.

Messina further elaborated that this move is not just about dipping toes into the digital asset pool, but also about preparing for potential client demands. “This shows there can be some attention to digital channels, but with very limited investment amounts,” he commented.

Such a strategy could signal to other financial institutions that there’s room for cryptocurrencies in traditional banking, especially if sophisticated clients show interest in these novel investment options.

Intesa betting on a favorable crypto environment in 2025

The timing of this investment is noteworthy. Following the US approval of its first crypto-based ETF at the start of 2024 and the election of a pro-crypto US government-in-waiting at the end of the year, Bitcoin’s price soared to unprecedented heights, reaching six figures by late 2024.

With expectations of favorable regulatory changes under the new US administration led by President-elect Donald Trump, the market anticipates further growth in 2025. Intesa Sanpaolo’s move could be seen as strategic, capitalizing on what many consider an opportune entry point into the cryptocurrency market.

This groundbreaking step by Italy’s leading bank not only highlights a shift towards embracing digital assets, but also sets a precedent for other banks in Italy and potentially across Europe to consider cryptocurrencies as part of their investment strategies.

As the financial world watches, this could lead to more integrated and innovative services blending traditional banking with the burgeoning world of digital currencies.

Both whales and retail investors alike believe SHIB can deliver the desired financial results in the long run. This blind faith in the token alone is what’s keeping SHIB afloat in the markets despite the harsh conditions.

  • Gokhstein buys huge stake in Shiba Inu because no “SHIB killer” will ever beat the real project

Gokhstein buys huge stake in Shiba Inu because no “SHIB killer” will ever beat the real project

    • David Gokhstein showed he is unwilling to dive into the Shiba Inu competitor THE Protocol, buying huge SHIB coins.
    • THE Protocol emerged from a jibe by Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin and is gaining traction as a potential SHIB-killer.

Last week, a tweet by Vitalik Buterin led to the birth and fast growth of THE Protocol, in competition to memecoin Shiba Inu (SHIB). However, some die-hard supporters of SHIB continue to back the crypto without any plans of switching their preferences to THE coin.

Prominent cryptocurrency influencer and the founder of Gokhshtein Media, David Gokhstein showed he is unwilling to dive into the Shiba Inu competitor. Instead, he doubled down on his support for the memecoin SHIB.

Expressing his undying support for Shiba Inu (SHIB), Gokhstein said that he would stick to the canine-themed cryptocurrency. Furthermore, he added that he has zero interest in the supposed SHIB killed “THE” coin. “I’m sticking with $SHIB — not interested in $THE at all,” he wrote. But this doesn’t mean that Mr. Gokhstein isn’t interested in any other memecoin in the market. In one of his other tweets, he writes:

Give me a meme token that has an actual roadmap, use-case and even a working product. I’m looking to throw $1,000 into something right now. Give me the next $SHIB.

Also, this is not the first time that Gokhstein has been publicly backing the SHIB cryptocurrency. In the past, the memecoin enthusiast has frequently shared his predictions for SHIB on Twitter. Earlier this month, Gokhstein said that Shiba Inu will have a parabolic rally in its next bull run. Before that, he had also expressed regret for not going all in Shiba Inu while investing in the memecoin. “When it came to meme tokens, I should have just [gone]all in on SHIB,” he said.

    Launch of THE Protocol

Last week, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin took a jibe at new crypto projects stating that protocols often use THE to gain traction in the market. He jokingly said that someone should be creating a project named THE Protocol.

A few days later, an ERC20 protocol THE Protocol (THE) came into existence. Memecoin $THE came into existence by drawing a leaf from the Shiba Inu playbook and many talked about it as the next SHIB-killer.

THE Protocol also gifted Buterin 100 million THE memcoins or 10 percent of THE coins in circulation. Soon after the creation of THE, its value propelled by 1000 percent the next day. However, it has lost much of its value since then.

While the launch of THE Protocol as a SHIB-killer managed to stir up some momentary interest in the memecoin, Shiba Inu is holding strong. The Shiba Inu ecosystem has seen some interesting developments in recent times. Recently, Shiba Inu secured a second rank as a Web3 security leaderboard, after Polygon. On the other hand, Canada-based crypto payment gateway, FCFPay allows users to pay for their Netflix and Amazon subscriptions in SHIB crypto.
