Amazon shareholders call for the company to hold 5% of its assets in Bitcoin

    • MicroStrategy’s stock has outperformed Amazon’s stock by 537% in the past year
    • The proposal calls for Amazon to include some Bitcoin to maximize shareholder value without taking on too much risk
    • Last week, Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy called on Microsoft to adopt Bitcoin, calling it “digital capital”

A group of Amazon shareholders has requested that the company allocate 5% of its assets in Bitcoin.

The National Center for Public Policy Research, a free-market, independent conservative think tank, submitted the proposal to Amazon for consideration at its 2025 annual shareholder meeting.

The proposal, shared by Tim Kotzman, a podcast host covering Bitcoin and MicroStrategy, recommends adding “assets to its treasury that appreciate more than bonds, even if those assets are more volatile short-term.”

The proposal points to Bitcoin’s price, which has increased more than 131% over the past year, outperforming corporate bonds by more than 126%, on average.

“MicroStrategy – which holds Bitcoin on its balance sheet – has had its stock outperform Amazon stock by 537% in the previous year,” the proposal said.

“And they’re not alone. Institutional and corporate Bitcoin adoption is becoming more commonplace: more public companies such as Tesla and Block have added Bitcoin to their balance sheets; Amazon’s second and fourth largest institutional shareholders – BlackRock and Fidelity, respectively – offer their clients a Bitcoin ETF; and the US government may form a Bitcoin strategic reserve in 2025.”

The proposal points out that while Bitcoin is a “volatile asset,” Amazon’s stock was the same in the past. Because of this, companies have “a responsibility to maximize shareholder value over the long-term as well as the short-term,” adding:

“Diversifying the balance sheet by including some Bitcoin solves this problem without taking on too much volatility. At minimum, Amazon should evaluate the benefits of holding some, even just 5%, of its assets in Bitcoin.”

Michael Saylor calls Bitcoin “digital capital”

The shareholder proposal comes as Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy, said to Microsoft that Bitcoin is the best asset a company should own, claiming it represents the “greatest digital transformation of the 21st century.”

In a three-minute video posted on X last week, Saylor said:

“Microsoft can’t afford to miss the next technology wave, and Bitcoin is the next wave. Bitcoin represents the greatest digital transformation of the 21st century; it represents digital capital.”

Talking about long-term capital, Saylor noted that risk – including general taxes, politics, recession, regulation, war, and the weather – is destroying over $10 trillion in capital each year.

Because of this, investors are turning their attention to digital capital, such as Bitcoin, to avoid these risks. In Saylor’s view, “it makes sense” for Microsoft to buy and hold Bitcoin rather than buy back stock or hold bonds.

“If you’re going to outperform, you’re going to need Bitcoin,” Saylor said. “You’ve surrendered hundreds of billions of dollars of capital over the past five years, and you’ve just amplified the risks that your own shareholders face. If you want to escape that vicious cycle, you’re going to need an asset without counterparty risk.”

In Saylor’s opinion, that lies with Bitcoin.

BitGo and Swan to launch a new trust company

Crypto custodian BitGo and bitcoin financial services firm Swan have announced plans to launch a Bitcoin-only trust company.

According to the press release published on Thursday, the Bitcoin-only trust company will offer custody without exposure to other digital currencies. The trust, which will be launched following regulatory approval, will combine BitGo’s custody capabilities with Swan’s expertise in fraud prevention and onboarding.

The companies said it would be the first Bitcoin-only trust company in the United States. BitGo CEO Mike Belshe said,

“We believe the best model for the Bitcoin industry is the same battle-tested model that has been part of the US financial industry for over a century: the separation of exchange and custody. Our teams have worked closely together for nearly a year on stronger qualified custody models. Early in 2023, we recognized the opportunity to establish a Bitcoin-only custodian, combining the unique capabilities of each company and supporting the innovators that will be at the forefront of pushing Bitcoin adoption.”

BitGo remains a leading custodian in the crypto space

This latest cryptocurrency news comes as BitGo continues to expand its presence in the cryptocurrency space despite the ongoing bear market. BitGo is one of the custodians Swan hired for its Bitcoin storage needs.

    Cory Klippsten, Swan’s CEO, also commented that;

“We immediately saw the vision,” said Cory Klippsten, Swan’s CEO. “For years, we’ve heard from major clients, partners, and other Bitcoin companies that they would prefer a Bitcoin-only software and services stack that is focused strictly on the best custody that leverages Bitcoin’s unique features. It’s important to us to build a custodian without the risks of securing many altcoins within the same trust company as Bitcoin. We want to do our part to build a dedicated ecosystem for Bitcoin, separate from industry speculators, to allow for innovation in custodial offerings.”

This latest development comes a few days after South Korean Hana Bank and BitGo announced a partnership to launch a joint crypto custody venture. The joint venture will combine Hana Bank’s knowledge of financial services and compliance with BitGo’s crypto custodial solutions.

  • Bitcoin may be world’s largest insurance company

Bitcoin may be world’s largest insurance company

    • Pompliano argues that Bitcoin’s unique properties make it an attractive insurance asset for a variety of reasons.
    • He says Bitcoin provides insurance against a variety of risks, including, currency debasement and sovereign default.
    • Bitcoin critics however point to things like the volatile nature of crypto assets and meagre adoption as reasons why it might not be the global insurance company.

Anthony Pompliano, a venture capitalist and popular Bitcoin advocate, argues that BTC could be considered the largest insurance company in the world.

The investor says the idea was proposed to him at a breakfast meeting with two investors, whose point suggested that the world’s largest insurance company may not “look like” the typical insurance company.

Why Bitcoin could be the insurance

Pompliano’s argument, published in the latest edition of The Pomp Letter, is based on the idea that Bitcoin provides insurance against a variety of risks, including, currency debasement, sovereign default, undisciplined monetary and fiscal policy, and economic censorship.

    He explained:

Just as there are different insurance policies that serve different purposes, Bitcoin is different things to different people. And just as most policyholders don’t want to ever have to use their insurance, most bitcoiners realise that bitcoin’s success will likely come on the heels of major issues in the legacy financial world.”

On what exactly makes Bitcoin an insurance, the entrepreneur listed a number of reasons.

He says Bitcoin is a one-time purchase, and it comes with certain advantages. Unlike traditional insurance policies, BTC doesn’t require ongoing premiums. If you buy early, Bitcoin comes as a cheap premium and much more expensive when done later.

The second reason is that cryptocurrency is a decentralised asset that is not subject to the control of any one entity, which makes it more reliable than traditional insurance companies. It also has an inverse relation to catastrophe in traditional finance, the latest example being when BTC price rose amid the US banking crisis.

Also, Bitcoin is a global asset that can be accessed by anyone, anywhere in the world, which makes it more accessible than traditional insurance products. As an insurance, its programmatic nature means holders don’t need to submit claims and wait for someone to judge whether to honour it or not.

    Bitcoin critics may disagree, but…

Although Bitcoin continues to see major adoption across the globe, the argument such as the one highlighted by Pompliano has not escaped crypto critics.

For some, BTC remains too volatile to be considered a reliable insurance asset. Another argument is that the digital asset hasn’t achieved the adoption levels that would make it a practical insurance choice for most people.

Pomp says the idea is still a viable one, especially with the possibility that Bitcoin can be an insurance against events like inflation and economic collapse. Most of these events have largely been “uninsurable.”

No insurance company is going to write you a legitimate policy against high inflation. They won’t write you a policy against government seizure of your assets. The insurance companies historically have not covered hyperinflation or economic collapse,” the investor argued.

He also thinks one doesn’t need to hold huge amounts of BTC to tap into the benefits. Putting about 1-3% of investment allocation into bitcoin can be an effective hedge against negative impact of economic risks.
