Bitcoin holds above $107 despite $172m Mt. Gox BTC transfer

    • Mt. Gox moved over $172 million in BTC to new wallet addresses.
    • The price of Bitcoin held strong despite bankrupt crypto exchange’s wallet activity.

Bankrupt crypto exchange Mt.Gox has notably transferred about 1,620 Bitcoin to new unknown addresses. The value of the Bitcoin transfer stood at over $172.5 million, and was sent to new addresses.

The transfers happened as BTC price hovered around $107,380, having hit new all-time highs above $107,822. Unlike in the past Mt. Gox transactions of the flagship cryptocurrency, the latest movement hasn’t seen BTC react violently lower. Dormant whales have also woken up, as Arkham Intelligence pointed out in a post on X.

    Mt.Gox Bitcoin transfers

Two weeks ago, the crypto exchange Mt. Gox made another Bitcoin transfer of 24,000 BTC to unknown wallets. According to Arkham, the bankrupt exchange transferred 1,619.6 BTC in two chunks, one of 1427.9 BTC and the other of 191.7 bitcoin to two new addresses.

Recently, the blockchain security and intelligence platform showed that Mt. Gox’s latest wallet activity also included the transfer of 1427.9 Bitcoin to an address starting with “1DeY. It then transferred 108 BTC and 191.7 BTC through several addresses before the coins ended in the wallet that currently holds 300 Bitcoin.

In November, Mt. Gox transfered $2.2 billion Bitcoin to unknown wallets amid repayment plans. On December 5, Mt. Gox made another Bitcoin transfer. It moved 24,000 BTC worth $2.5 billion a time when BTC was trading at $ 100,000, an all-time high at the time.

Arkham notes the exchange has 36,085 Bitcoin holdings estimated to be worth $3.86 billion. The deadline for creditor repayment will be October 31, 2025.

Despite downside pressure, Bitcoin has recovered from previous Mt. Gox dumps to hit new all-time highs above $100.

The bullish market sentiment is down to multiple catalysts. It includes greater institutional demand for spot Bitcoin ETFs, US election that has a pro-crypto administration in place and the exit of SEC’s Gary Gensler. New pro-crypto picks for the SEC and CFTC will help the push for regularity clarity.

There’s also the buying spree by MicroStrategy and several other companies, including Boyaa Interactive, Metaplanet and the miner industry led by Marathon, Riot and Semler Scientific, are hodling BTC. The companies have adopted the Bitcoin treasury strategy that has seen MicroStrategy become the world’s largest corporate holder of BTC.

    • Mt. Gox moved 32,371 Bitcoin to two wallets, amounting to $2.19 billion
    • The movement follows the transfer of 500 Bitcoin worth more than $35 million
    • In October, Mt. Gox announced it was pushing its repayment deadline to October 31, 2025

Defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox has moved another $2.19 billion to two unmarked wallets, according to data from blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence.

Of the $2.19 billion, 30,371 Bitcoin was transferred to wallet 1FG2C…Rveoy. The extra 2,000 Bitcoin was sent to a cold wallet before being transferred to wallet 15gNRV…Aok. According to data from Arkham, the movement of Bitcoin comes five days after the exchange moved 500 Bitcoin worth over $35 million.

It’s one of the largest movements the exchange has made this year. In May, it was reported that Mt. Gox had transferred over $9 billion worth of Bitcoin to a new wallet. In July, the platform moved a further $2.8 billion. In both of these instances, it was thought Mt Gox’s trustee was preparing for repayment to creditors.

It may be that this further movement of Bitcoin is related to repaying creditors, something they have been waiting for since a hack caused the exchange to collapse in 2014. In October, Mt. Gox pushed its repayment deadline to October 31, 2025, adding another year from its original date.

Last month, Mt. Gox said the extended deadline was down to two things: creditors not completing the repayment steps and issues arising from the repayment process.

    • Mt. Gox said the delay was down to creditors not completing the repayment steps and issues arising from the repayment process
    • In 2024, Mt. Gox collapsed following a security breach, resulting in the loss of 850,000 Bitcoin

Defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox has pushed its repayment deadline to October 2025, adding another year from its original date.

According to a statement from the exchange, it will now repay creditors on October 31, 2025.

“As it is desirable to make the Repayments to such rehabilitation creditors to the extent reasonably practicable, the Rehabilitation Trustee, with the permission of the court, has changed the deadline for the Repayments from October 31, 2024 (Japan Standard Time) to October 31, 2025 (Japan Standard Time),” Mt. Gox said.

This marks the second time the platform has moved its deadline. In a 2023 statement, the platform announced that it was moving its repayment deadline from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2024.

Launched in 2010, Mt. Gox was the biggest crypto exchange, handling around 70% of Bitcoin transactions, before a hack in 2014 caused its collapse. As a result of its security breach, the exchange lost around 850,000 Bitcoin.

In July, it began repaying creditors around $9 billion in recovered assets; however, according to data from Arkham Intelligence, Mt. Gox still holds 44,905 Bitcoin worth around $2.8 billion.

In the latest statement from the defunct exchange, the delay is down to two things: creditors haven’t completed the necessary steps for repayment and because of issues arising from the repayment process.

Bitstamp to distribute Mt. Gox BTC from July 25

    • Bitstamp plans to distribute Mt. Gox Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash as from Thursday, July 25.
    • The exchange will have a separate distribution plan for customers in the UK.

Bitstamp announced on Wednesday that the crypto exchange had received Bitcoin (BTC) from Mt. Gox and that it would begin distribution to creditors on Thursday.

The exchange also has Bitcoin Cash from the Mt. Gox trustee, with this coming a decade since the Bitcoin exchange collapsed following a major hacking incident. After a ten-year wait, customers of the defunct crypto exchange can now have their digital assets back.

    Bitstamp receives Mt. Gox BTC

Bitstamp said in an announcement that it would begin the distribution process on July 25, 2024. However, it also urged customers to be patient as the process of verification continues.

“We’re pleased to announce that we’ve received the Mt. Gox assets. We’re working diligently to distribute them to our Bitstamp customers who are Mt. Gox creditors. Please allow up to one week for security checks. We’ll inform you when the transfer is finalized,” the exchange notified users via X.

Bitstamp has also told its users in the UK that distribution for this group will be undertaken through a separate plan.

“Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated on the process and ensure you receive your assets as soon as possible,” its post on X reads.

    Bitcoin price holds above $66k

Mt. Gox repayments began this month and continues to provide notable downward pressure for BTC price. A significant number of users however have not sold amid the distribution. For instance, CryptoQuant analysts pointed to the increase in BTC outflows from Kraken as the exchange distributed Mt. Gox bitcoin to its customers.

According to analysts, this scenario could bolster Bitcoin’s potential price rebound.

The flagship cryptocurrency currently hovers above $66k, with bulls showing strength since recovering from the recent dump to under $64k.

Mt. Gox moves Bitcoin worth nearly $2.8 billion

    • Mt.Gox has moved over 44,500 BTC worth over $2.8 billion to an internal wallet.
    • The price of BTC fell slightly after the transfer, retreating to around $62,835.

On-chain data shows a wallet linked to Mt. Gox has just moved more than $2.8 billion worth of Bitcoin.

The huge transfer comes as Bitcoin price looks to hold gains seen since last weekend’s attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

Mt.Gox transfers over $2.8 billion in BTC

On Tuesday, Lookonchain shared details of a large BTC transfer.

Citing data tracked by blockchain analytics firm Arkham, the platform said the transfer originated from the wallet of defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox.

The said Mt. Gox wallet moved over 44,500 BTC worth over $2.84 billion, with this going to an internal wallet. Market anticipation is that the exchange’s trustee could be preparing for a repayment round following an announcement in late May.

Mt. Gox moved 47,000 bitcoins last month ahead of the expected repayments commencement date this July. As then, Tuesday’s transfer saw the price of BTC slip slightly from above $63,000.

Analysts at Bitfinex said in a report on Monday that while positive news will continue to dictate BTC movement, the threat of fresh sell-off pressure remains. Mt. Gox, which currently holds 138,985 BTC worth over $8.8 billion, is likely to be one source of this anticipated downside pressure.

“Crypto asset prices in general in the current period have been determined by the news agenda, rather than fundamentals. Selling pressure concerns have not completely disappeared as Mt. Gox creditors are also scheduled to receive their BTC payouts over the next couple of weeks. We expect these headlines to continue to have some impact on price before a complete pricing in of the situation,” Bitfinex analysts wrote in the weekly report.

    Bitcoin currently trades around $62,835.

    • Mt. Gox creditors confirm Japanese Yen refunds via PayPal after a decade-long wait.
    • Mt. Gox’s 2014 collapse, losing 950,000 Bitcoins, triggered years of legal battles.
    • The extended repayment timeline could influence 2024 market dynamics.

After a decade of anticipation, creditors of the infamous Mt. Gox Bitcoin exchange are finally receiving repayments for their locked-up funds. Recent reports on social media, particularly Reddit, suggest that Mt. Gox has initiated the distribution of Japanese Yen-denominated refunds through PayPal. This comes a few months after Mt.Gox hinted at making BTC payouts before the end of 2023.

The development marks a significant development in one of the largest cryptocurrency exchange collapses, where approximately 950,000 Bitcoins worth $450 million vanished in 2014, leaving creditors in limbo for years.

    A decade-long wait

On December 25, users on the mtgoxinsolvency Reddit page shared their experiences of receiving Japanese Yen-denominated refunds via PayPal. Among them, Free-end254 posted a screenshot of a PayPal receipt, confirming the receipt of funds. Another user, initially sceptical, later verified the legitimacy of the payment in their PayPal account.

This development follows an announcement in late November by Mt. Gox trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, revealing plans to initiate repayments in cash in 2023, with expectations of ongoing payments throughout 2024.

While official confirmation from Mt. Gox is still pending, these user reports suggest a significant step forward in compensating affected creditors.

Mt. Gox’s complex history of loss and legal battles

In February 2014, Mt. Gox, once among the largest Bitcoin exchanges, faced a catastrophic event, losing around 950,000 Bitcoins, valued at $450 million. The exchange’s claim of an additional 100,000 missing Bitcoins further exacerbated the crisis. The exact reasons behind the theft remain unclear, but a combination of poor security measures and potential insider involvement was suspected.

The loss had a profound impact on Mt. Gox’s creditors, who deposited their Bitcoins with the expectation of easy withdrawals. However, the exchange’s collapse left these funds trapped for almost a decade.

Creditors resorted to legal actions against Mt. Gox and its former CEO, Mark Karpeles, in an attempt to recover their losses.

    Mt. Gox repayment process

In late November, Mt. Gox creditors received an email from trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, outlining the plan to initiate repayments. The distribution process involves utilizing funds from asset sales and recovered Bitcoin. Although the repayment timeline extends into 2024 due to varying processing times, this marks a significant stride toward closing the chapter on a complex and protracted legal battle.

The extended repayment period may potentially impact the Bitcoin market, as creditors, finally gaining access to their assets, could choose to sell or exchange their crypto holdings. With the court allowing an extension until October 31, 2024, Mt. Gox creditors are now on the cusp of reclaiming a portion of their long-lost investments.

    • Mt.Gox Bitcoin exploit took place in 2014.
    • The exploit remains the largest Bitcoin exploit in the history of cryptocurrencies.
    • Mt.Gox creators may however start receiving their bitcoins this month.

Mt.Gox creditors may have a reason to smile after the exchange’s January statement hinted that the creditors could start receiving their Bitcoin (BTC) this month.

It is about 8 years since The Mt. Gox hack occurred in early 2014 resulting in the loss of about 850,000 BTC which at today’s bitcoin value is worth more than $20.060 billion making it the worst Bitcoin hack ever as detailed in our Bitcoin statistics research.

Most Mt.Gox creditors lost hope of getting their bitcoins back since the issue has dragged on for years. One Mt. Gox creditor, Adam Back who is also the Blockstream CEO said via Telegram:

“Well, for myself, I had pretty much written off the Bitcoin I still had on Mt. Gox in 2014 as a loss, so philosophically anything I get back now is a bonus to cold store. It has stretched on for many more years than anyone expected, and so it will be welcome I am sure by any creditors to finally get paid.”

Early repayments to start from March 10

According to Mt.Gox’s January statement, creditors are expected to start seeing early bitcoin repayments from March 10. The early repayment process is planned to continue for a period of about seven months up to September 30, 2023.

The early repayments include early lump sum payments and intermediate payments. Further repayment amounts are to be made later.

Mt.Gox creditors were supposed to register with an exchange and nominate it to receive the repayments on their behalf. Exchanges have however given various timelines for processing payments. BitGo crypto exchange, for example, said that they will take about 20 days to process the repayments, while Kraken said that processing the payments could take up to 90 days.

Amount of bitcoin to be repaid

It is not clear how much bitcoin will be repaid to the Mt.Gox creditors during the repayment period. However, it is clear that it will be a portion of Mt.Gox’s balance sheet that according to a balance sheet in 2019 totals about 142,000 BTC, 143,000 BCH, and 69 billion Yen. The balance sheet is believed to have not changed much since then.

There are expectations that the claimants may receive about 21% of the civil rehabilitation claim value because the exchange rates have been revalued since the time of bankruptcy filing.

According to a moderator of the MtGoxInsolvency subreddit, the first 200,000 Yen worth of each creditor’s claim will be paid in Yen. If the claim is greater than 200,000 Yen, the creditors will choose crypto and cash, where they will receive 71% repayment in crypto and 29% in cash after the initial payment.
