    Metaplanet adds another 5419 BTC

    • Metaplanet buys 5,419 BTC, lifting reserves to 25,555 BTC worth $2.7B.
    • The company has funded the BTC purchases through $1B+ share sales and equity offerings.
    • Metaplanet targets 210,000 BTC by 2027, cementing role as Asia’s largest holder.

Metaplanet has once again expanded its Bitcoin (BTC) holdings, purchasing 5,419 BTC in a move worth more than $627 million.

The acquisition, disclosed on September 22, lifts the Tokyo-listed company’s reserves to 25,555 BTC, valued at over $2.7 billion.

With this purchase, the firm has re-entered the top five corporate Bitcoin holders, surpassing rivals such as Tesla and Coinbase, and has firmly established itself as Asia’s largest public holder of the digital asset.

    Metaplanet’s largest purchase to date

Notably, the latest acquisition is the biggest single purchase in Metaplanet’s history. The company paid an average of roughly $115,900 per BTC, spending nearly 94 billion yen in total.

The acquisition has increased its cumulative Bitcoin investments to 398.21 billion yen, or about $2.67 billion, with an average purchase price of just over $104,000 per BTC.

The Chief Executive, Simon Gerovich, noted that the company’s Bitcoin Yield has surged to 395.1% year-to-date in 2025.

The rapid pace of accumulation underscores just how aggressive Metaplanet has become in executing what it describes as its “Bitcoin-first” strategy.

In mid-April this year, the firm held just 4,525 BTC. By June, it had already reached 10,000 BTC, months ahead of schedule. From 13,350 BTC at the end of June, Metaplanet has nearly doubled its reserves in less than three months.

From hospitality to a Bitcoin powerhouse

Metaplanet’s transformation has been dramatic. Once engaged in hospitality and media, the company has reinvented itself as a corporate Bitcoin treasury under Gerovich’s leadership.

The company now positions itself as a regional counterpart to Michael Saylor’s Strategy, whose 638,985 BTC holdings dominate the corporate Bitcoin landscape.

The strategy is ambitious. Metaplanet’s immediate target is 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025. By 2026, it aims to hold 100,000 BTC, before scaling to 210,000 BTC by 2027 — roughly 1% of Bitcoin’s fixed supply.

To fund these moves, the firm has leaned heavily on capital markets. Earlier this month, it completed an international share sale that raised more than $1 billion, while in September alone, it issued 385 million new shares to raise $1.4 billion.

Most of the proceeds are earmarked for Bitcoin purchases, linking investor funds directly to its treasury expansion.

    Market impact

Despite the bold progress, Metaplanet’s share price dropped 1.64% on the day of the announcement, extending a 28% decline over the past month.

Even so, the stock remains up more than 66% year-to-date, reflecting ongoing investor interest in its role as a proxy for Bitcoin exposure.

The firm’s upgrade to mid-cap status by FTSE Russell this September has also strengthened its visibility, bringing passive inflows from global index funds.

The broader market reaction was muted, with Bitcoin (BTC) itself slipping below $115,000 around the same time, dragged lower by technical resistance, whale activity, and regulatory headlines.

Nevertheless, Metaplanet’s willingness to buy during periods of weakness underscores its conviction that Bitcoin is a long-term store of value rather than a short-term trade.

Metaplanet, a Japanese Bitcoin treasury company, has purchased an additional 775 BTC for roughly $93 million as part of its ongoing accumulation strategy.

The firm disclosed the latest acquisition on Monday through a post by its president, Simon Gerovich, on X.

Gerovich said the company acquired the bitcoins at an average cost of $120,006 each.

With the latest purchase, Metaplanet’s total bitcoin holdings have risen to 18,888 BTC, valued at about $1.94 billion.

The firm’s average purchase price now stands at $102,653 per bitcoin.

Metaplanet began implementing its Bitcoin accumulation strategy in April 2024.

The firm is currently the seventh-largest holder of Bitcoin globally, according to Bitcointreasuries data.

In his post announcing the milestone, Gerovich noted the company’s growing treasury position and reaffirmed its commitment to the strategy.

    Metaplanet’s Q2 results

The company also released its second-quarter financial results last week.

Total revenue reached 1.2 billion yen ($8.4 million), representing a 41% increase from the previous quarter.

Net income swung to a profit of 11.1 billion yen ($75.1 million), compared to a net loss of 5 billion yen ($34.2 million) in the first quarter.

Metaplanet said it continues to project full-year revenue of 3.4 billion yen and operating profit of 2.5 billion yen.

The company attributed this outlook to recurring income from cash-secured put premiums and its operational performance.

    Metaplanet stock under pressure

Despite the upbeat earnings and treasury expansion, Metaplanet’s stock price fell 8.6% on Friday to close at 866 yen.

On Monday, shares recovered slightly, rising 0.6% around midday in Japan, while markets were still open.

Addressing the recent weakness, Gerovich acknowledged the disappointment among investors but stressed confidence in the company’s long-term approach.

He said the firm’s bitcoin income generation business has expanded for three consecutive quarters, adding that recurring income provides resilience and flexibility to support future financing and treasury operations.

    Bitcoin price today

The latest acquisition comes as bitcoin’s price faces volatility.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency touched a new all-time high of $124,474 last Thursday before retreating 4% the same day.

Over the weekend, it traded around the $117,300 level and was slightly lower at the start of the week, nearing key support at $116,000.

If Bitcoin closes below that level, analysts note that the decline could extend toward its 50-day Exponential Moving Average of $115,031.

A further break below could test the next support zone near $111,980.

    • The funds raised will be specifically allocated for further Bitcoin purchases.
    • The bonds were sold in full to EVO FUND.
    • The bonds offer investors the potential for early repayment if certain conditions are met.

Tokyo-based Metaplanet is taking steps to expand its cryptocurrency portfolio by issuing ¥3.6 billion (approximately $24.8 million) in bonds to fund the acquisition of more Bitcoin (BTC).

This move comes as the Japanese hotel firm’s Bitcoin holdings surpass the 5,000 BTC mark.

The bonds, which carry no interest, are set to be redeemed at their par value on October 31, 2025, or earlier, if the bondholder requests repayment.

The funds raised will be specifically allocated for further Bitcoin purchases, continuing the company’s earlier strategy to increase its digital asset investments.

The bonds were sold in full to EVO FUND, a move Metaplanet hopes will help support its growing Bitcoin strategy.

While the bonds carry no interest, they offer investors the potential for early repayment if certain conditions are met.

Specifically, Metaplanet plans to use capital raised through stock acquisition rights to redeem the bonds.

This means the company’s ability to repay the bonds hinges on the demand for its equity-linked instruments, highlighting a potential reliance on investor sentiment and market conditions.

Metaplanet’s recent bond issuance underscores the growing trend of companies integrating Bitcoin into their financial strategies.

With cryptocurrency markets gaining momentum, the company’s move aligns with the broader trend of corporate adoption of digital assets as a store of value.

As Metaplanet’s share price recently rose by 8.6%, investors are keeping a close eye on how the company’s Bitcoin purchases will impact its financial performance in the coming years.

In an era where digital currencies are becoming more mainstream, Metaplanet’s decision to use bonds for Bitcoin acquisition marks a noteworthy step toward integrating cryptocurrency into corporate balance sheets.

Japan-based investment firm Metaplanet on October 7 announced that it has made yet another significant acquisition of Bitcoin, boosting its holdings to a total of 639.5 BTC, valued at approximately $40.5 million.

The company, which has garnered the nickname “Asia’s MicroStrategy” for its aggressive Bitcoin purchasing strategy, acquisition of an additional 108.78 BTC, worth roughly $7 million at the current Bitcoin price of $63,600.

Metaplanet’s Bitcoin strategy has been nothing short of bold. Since May 2024, when it first adopted Bitcoin as its strategic treasury reserve asset, the firm has made regular purchases to strengthen its cryptocurrency portfolio.

In total, Metaplanet has invested 6 billion Japanese yen into Bitcoin over the past few months. Its consistent buying behaviour has drawn comparisons to MicroStrategy, the American company known for its own large-scale Bitcoin acquisitions.

This most recent purchase has led to a surge in Metaplanet’s stock price, which climbed more than 11% on October 7, reaching an intraday high of 1,047 Japanese yen (approximately $7). Market analysts remain optimistic about Bitcoin’s trajectory, with predictions suggesting it could rise to $77,700 by the end of October. As Bitcoin continues its upward momentum, Metaplanet’s ongoing acquisition strategy could further solidify its position as a leading player in the cryptocurrency space.

    BTC as a corporate strategy

The partnership with SBI VC Trade comes amid Metaplanet’s increasing bet on Bitcoin as part of its corporate strategy. In April 2024, the company disclosed its addition of BTC as a core treasury asset and committed an initial 1 billion Japanese yen to buying Bitcoin.

Over the next months, the strategic pivot has seen the industry dub Metaplanet as “Asia’s MicroStrategy” in a nod to its target to mirror the US-listed MicroStrategy’s embrace of the digital asset.

Currently, the Michael Saylor-led company has acquired a total of 226,500 BTC. This accounts for just over 1% of the total supply of Bitcoin and makes MicroStrategy the largest holder of BTC among publicly-traded companies.

On the other hand, Metaplanet holds a total of 360 BTC, having increased its holdings with a series of purchases over the past two months.
